I got a Notice to Appear—what happens next?
You have the right to an Immigration Court hearing before a judge. The NTA should list the date, time, place, and the government’s allegations; if you miss it, a removal order can be issued. At the hearing, your lawyer can present evidence and, if needed, appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals.
Can I be deported because of a criminal conviction?
Some convictions—like “aggravated felonies” or certain “crimes involving moral turpitude”—can trigger removal. Even then, a lawyer may challenge how the offense is classified, argue for waivers, or pursue protection such as relief under the Convention Against Torture.
What kinds of relief can stop or delay my deportation?
